Here is the last update for 2002. Since more than nine cars went up,
this article has a list of the most recent additions. Read on for
some changes to the way the Hot Wheels are presented.
I've been growing a bit concerned about the amount of space I'm using
on the server. Obviously, most of the space is taken up by the
photos of the cars, so I've changed the storage size of the pictures
from 1024x768 to 640x480. This change reduces the space requirements
of the large pictures to half what they were at full size. This conversion is done by the ever-flexible
jpgtn at -q&nbr;100, so the quality should not drop any.
I've done some
spot checking, and pictures that were known to be good are still good, while
pictures which were known to be bad are not any worse.
The pictures
are still stored on my home system at the maximum resolution and I may
make them available in the future, we will have to see.
The other change I've made
is to knock the quality of the list pages and gallery thumbnails down
a peg. This reduces the space occupied by the thumbnails to 25% of what
it was before the change was made.
Hopefully this won't bother anyone -- the hit counters on the server
suggest that it won't -- but if it does bother you, drop me a line
and we'll see what's what, even if I can't make any promises.
That said, here is the list of the new cars:
You'll notice that some of these cars have different lighting, I've
been experimenting a bit with auxilary lights of various types and
positionings to see what makes a good picture. Some of these are
reasonably good, while others are not. Also, the autofocus seems to be
a bit off.
Feedback always appreciated.
Update, 1 Jan 2003: Dang, I messed up the links -- they didn't work if
you clicked on the article from the site's main content page. They should
work now.
